Town council in the Vancouver Island community of Tofino is considering a ban on new fast-food franchises and chain restaurants, including the ubiquitous coffee house.
Councillors directed staff Tuesday to prepare a report on such a ban.
Councillor Stephen Ashton pitched the motion, saying the town on the west coast of the island is a unique community because it doesn’t have Starbucks, Tim Hortons or McDonald’s.
“I think that we have to be proactive,” said Mr. Ashton, who manages a beach resort. “The first time I went to Venice, no McDonald’s. Now they’re everywhere.”
