Boom or bust, GrubHub delivers for both diners and restaurants
“I like this turquoise couch,” said GrubHub Inc. CEO Matt Maloney, as he inspected the legs of the piece. “It’s got that ’80s Miami Vice feel to it.”
Maloney was sitting in a corner of GrubHub’s 10,000 square-foot office space on Chicago’s North Side, where the company relocated in December. After all, when your company grows to 50 employees from 12 in one year, 4,000 square feet doesn’t cut it.
GrubHub.com is a Web site that allows users to search for restaurants delivering food to their neighborhood by address, cuisine or a specific food item, and place the order online. The site currently operates for eight cities.
With the Chicago metropolitan area’s unemployment rate hovering around 11 percent as of January, and state unemployment at 11 percent, the recession and the dine-in movement are enabling GrubHub to grow and also help keep restaurants open.
