Buddy’s new owner looks to staff to make sure restaurant doesn’t change
For more than 30 years, Buddy’s Rib and Steak has been the type of place where people stop for breakfast before heading to work and where retirees gather for a bite to eat and a bit of conversation.
During the decades in which the world saw major changes, Buddy’s offered a comfortable sense of stability. Customers knew they would find the same food and the same familiar faces serving them.
Presiding over it all was longtime restaurateur Buddy Hall.
A week ago, Hall turned over the keys to the front door to Buddy’s new owner, Phillip Guy.
“I have eaten here for a long time and our families are friends,” Guy said of his relationship with Hall.
That friendship led to discussions about buying the restaurant, located at 2701 Lurleen Wallace Blvd. in Northport.
During six months of negotiations, Guy said he knew he had to do one thing. To succeed in his new venture, Buddy’s had to stay the same.
“I will admit I don’t know anything about the restaurant business,” said Guy, owner of Tuscaloosa-based Guy Industrial Construction.
That’s why he said he is depending on Buddy’s staff to teach him the business.
