Foodie rock star ‘Dave’ attracts plenty of fans
At first glance, David Chang, in his black, trail-battered sandals, khaki shorts and striped shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looks like every other tourist trotting along the marble floors of Southbank’s Langham Hotel. Except perhaps when he takes an escalator and, nearing the ground floor, turns up to a woman calling his name. ”David! I tasted your cookies,” she yells with a nod that would suggest she was impressed.
On the ground floor, where he is joined by a small, clipboard-carrying entourage, another passer-by gives him the thumbs up. It is enough to make a snapper there take a photo of Chang – who is in town for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival – and say: ”He’s like a bloody rock star.”
A baseball cap promoting his famed Momofuku eateries hardly screams rock star, but the burly cook is a self-confessed ”badass”, loves his music (he flew to Melbourne early to see indie rock band Pavement) and, perhaps as greatest proof, figures in the food world seem to nonchalantly refer to him as ”Dave”. His grounds for being a star are more solid – at 32 he has nabbed two Michelin stars, a healthy handful of rising star and best new chef awards and is the main attraction of the city’s food festival this month.
