Local seafood restaurants brace for higher prices
As the massive oil spill threatens the Gulf Coast’s fishing industry, Palm Beach County restaurant owners are bracing for higher seafood prices.
“If restaurants aren’t able to get their supply from that area, it’s going to drive prices up for everyone,” said Roger Berkowitz, chief executive of Legal Sea Foods in Boston. Legal operates a restaurant in Boca Raton.
Most local restaurant owners prefer to serve fish caught off the east coast of Florida. They also tend toward shellfish from other parts of the United States and even the globe.
But they are concerned that the loss of a large part of the nation’s seafood supply will ripple through the market. In Louisiana alone, the seafood industry is worth $2.4 billion.
“The gulf produces a huge amount of seafood, and the majority of it is consumed domestically,” said Stephen Gyland of Cod & Capers Seafood, a retail/wholesale company in Palm Beach Gardens.
