Holland’s original McDonald’s will close this weekend, get knocked down next week and be replaced by a new, “green” restaurant by Memorial Day.

Tony Castillo, owner of the Milagro Six Inc., which operates three Holland-area McDonald’s, said Saturday will be the last day of business for the restaurant on Eighth Street just east of U.S. 31.

The new building will be the latest McDonald’s design, he said, built with a higher profile and closer to Eighth Street, but at the same location.

It also will have a side-by-side drive-through. “We can double our capacity at the drive-through,” he said.

“This won’t be your father’s McDonald’s,” Castillo said, with “more of a coffee shop, relaxing environment” with soft colors, a fireplace and flat-screen televisions.

A new play place will include, he said, “things that encourage movement for young kids.”

And while Castillo had hopes of opening before Tulip Time, the target is Memorial Day.
