Restaurant Chain Growth Report 7/23/13Growing Concepts
Concepts that have grown by at least 5% (if less than 50 units).

MARIO BATALI RESTAURANTS based in New York, NY (founded 1998) has increased by 1 unit for Osteria Mozza, from 2 to 3 (50% concept growth) and by 1 unit for Otto Enoteca from 2 to 3 (50% concept growth).  Other company concepts are B&B Ristorante (1), Babbo Ristorante (1), Bar Jamon (1), Carnevino Italian Steakhouse (1), Casa Mono (1), Del Posto (1), Eataly (1), Esca (1), Lupa (2), Manzo (1), Mozza2go (1), Pizzeria Mozza (3) and Tarry Lodge (2).  Overall company increase was from 21 to 23 (10% growth).  These tend to be upscale restaurants with full bar and seating for around 80.  Lunch and dinner are served.  Catering and banquet services are available.  Locations are in CA, CT, NV, NY and Asia.

Columbus, MS-based EAT WITH US (founded 1982) has increased by 1 unit for the Sweet Peppers Deli concept, from 16 to 17 (6% concept growth).  Other company concepts include Bulldog Deli (1), Grill (3), Harvey’s (3), and Park Heights (1).  Overall company increase was from 24 to 25 (4% growth).  These are mostly fast casual concepts, open for lunch and dinner, serving American cuisine.  Park Heights, Grill and Harvey’s have full bar service.  Average seating at all concepts is around 80.  Catering, private party, and online ordering services are available.  Between 20% and 30% of the restaurants are franchised.  Trading areas are AL, GA, MS, and TN.

Salt Lake City, UT-based LA FRONTERA CAFÉ has increased by 1 unit, from 9 to 10 (11% growth).  This family/casual Mexican restaurant concept is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a $6-$15+ per person check average.  Units serve beer and seat around 250.  Banquet rooms are available.  All locations are in UT.

ROY ROGERS of Frederick, MD (founded 1968) has increased by 5 units, from 45 to 50 (11% growth).  These are quick serve restaurants with seating for around 100.  Meal periods are breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $4-$10.  Locations are more than 60% franchised and are in MA, MD, NJ, NY, PA, VA and WV.

Duluth, MN-based BLACK WOODS GRILL & BAR (founded 1994) has increased by 1 unit for the Black Woods concept, from 3 to 4 (33% concept growth).  The company is also the franchisee of 1 Perkins Family Restaurant unit.  Overall company increase was from 4 to 5 (25% company growth).  The Black Woods concept is family/casual, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is $8-$20, with full bar service.  Seating is for about 225.  Catering and banquet services are available.  Trading areas are MN and WI.

Greenwood Village, CO-based RED ROBIN GOURMET BURGERS (NASDAQ: RRGB; founded 1969) has increased by 8 units, from 466 to 474 (2% growth).  This family/casual concept serves American cuisine (specializing in burgers) and is open for lunch and dinner.  The restaurants have full bar and seat around 250.  Between 20% and 30% of the restaurants are franchised.  Trading areas are AB, AK, AL, AR, AZ, BC, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WI.

Ohio-based GIONINO’S PIZZERIA (founded 1990) has increased by 3 units, from 39 to 42 (8% growth).  These quick serve pizzerias are open for lunch and dinner, with a $3-$8 per person price range.  Units have limited seating and offer online ordering and delivery service.  Between 60% and 70% of the locations are franchised.  All are located in OH.

Sandy, UT-based RODIZIO GRILL (founded 1995) has increased by 4 units, from 10 to 14 (40% growth) and entered into NJ, PA, TX, and WI.  This is an upscale South American steakhouse concept, open for lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is $15-$50+, with full bar and seating for about 200.  Banquet services are offered.  Trading areas are CO, CT, FL, MA, MN, NJ, OH, PA, TN, TX, UT, and WI.  Franchise opportunities are now available.

Vancouver, BC-based DANIEL HOSPITALITY GROUP (founded 2001) has increased by 2 units, from 5 to 7 (40% growth) with the addition of a new concept called Tap & Barrel (2).  Other company concepts are Burrard Bridge Marine Bar & Grill (1), Prospect Point Café (1), Stanley Park Pavilion (1), Stanley’s Park Bar & Grill (1)¸ and The Mill Marine Bistro & Bar (1).  The restaurants are family/casual, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving American cuisine.  Per person check average is $10-$30, with full bar and average seating for about 200.  Catering, banquet, and delivery services are available.  All locations are in BC.

RUGGLE’S RESTAURANTS of Houston, TX (founded 1993) has increased by 2 units for Ruggle’s Green, from 2 to 4 (100% growth).  These are family/casual restaurants with full bar and seating for around 250.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $10-$30.  Banquets and patio seating are available.  All locations are in TX.

ROTI MEDITERRANEAN GRILL based in Chicago, IL (founded 2007) has increased by 2 units, from 15 to 17 (13% growth) and expanded into NY.  These are fast casual restaurants with seating for around 50.  Meal periods are breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $6-$12.  Catering and delivery services are available.  Locations are in DC, IL, MD, NY and VA.

Grants Pass, OR-based DUTCH BROS COFFEE (founded 1992) has increased by 28 units, from 173 to 201 (16% growth).  This fast casual coffee shop is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner hours, with a $2-$6 per person price range.  Drive-thru service is available.  Trading areas are AZ, CA, CO, ID, NV, OR, and WA.  We last featured this concept on 5/8/12 (5% growth).

Irvine, CA-based YARD HOUSE RESTAURANT (founded 1996) has increased by 5 units, from 40 to 45 (13% growth) and entered into NC, OH, and WA.  This family/casual concept is open for lunch and dinner, serving American cuisine.  Per person check average is $10-$30, with full bar service and seating for about 300.  Catering, banquet, and online ordering services are available.  The restaurants are located in AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, HI, IL, KS, MA, NC, NV, NY, OH, TX, VA, and WA.  We wrote about this concept on 4/3/12 (13% growth) and again on 10/23/12 (11% growth).
