Registered dietitian Pam Davis makes a living counseling people about nutrition and health, but even she has found it difficult when eating at restaurants to guess which menu items are healthier choices.

She tries to check a restaurant’s website for nutrition information ahead of time, but that’s not always feasible or available, so she’s left guessing.

Under a provision of federal health-care reform, diners wouldn’t have to wonder about calories in menu items.

The legislation requires restaurants and other retail food establishments with more than 20 locations with the same menu to list calories where consumers can readily see the information when making selections. The new regulations would go into effect next year or later at the earliest.
