Sonny’s bucks trend, drops prices
Sonny’s Real Pit Bar-B-Q in Central Florida has something new on its menu that you won’t usually find: Lower prices.
It’s a bold move for the Maitland-based chain because Walmart-style rollbacks rarely happen in the restaurant world. Prices generally inch up to cover inflation and keep sales numbers high.
In these tough times, restaurants have lured recession-pinched customers by offering coupons or hawking dining specials, and some have tried holding the line on what they charge. But “it’s almost unheard of to go downward” on regular menu items, said R. J. Hottovy, an analyst for investment-research firm Morningstar.
The bad economy, though, has also brought down the price of what Sonny’s pays its vendors.
As meat prices dropped, Sonny’s took advantage of the opportunity to renegotiate contracts, spokeswoman Monique Yeager said.
“The economy has affected so many people. It’s taken a toll on the community,” Yeager said. “We hope it allows people to eat out more often.”
Sonny’s has cut regular prices on most of its offerings, by anywhere from just 10 cents to a dollar.
