If you’re like most Americans, you probably reserve things like airline tickets, hotel rooms and rental cars on the Internet. But when it comes to snagging a table in a restaurant, you probably do it the way you always did: by phone.

That may soon change, thanks largely to the efforts of OpenTable (OPEN). Since its founding in 1998, the firm has seated some 130 million diners through its online reservation system. By the end of last year, more than 12,000 restaurants worldwide were in the network.

Management says this is not only convenient for diners, but also helps restaurants fill seats in the most efficient way possible.

“We find that restaurateurs value the ability to provide excellent guest services and guest recognition,” said Chief Financial Officer Matt Roberts. “They’re also interested in the overall numbers — how many people they’ve seated, what kind of table configuration would optimize their profitability — those types of statistical information.”
