DineEquity CEO dishes on how millennials are revolutionizing businessJulia Stewart was the first female CEO of IHOP and the former president of Applebee’s. Today, she is the CEO for DineEquity, parent company of both brands, leading Applebee’s to become the No. 1 market-share leader in casual dining and IHOP to become the leader in family dining. She spoke Wednesday at the Central Exchange in downtown Kansas City as part of the organization’s CEO series, and shared some of the greatest lessons she’s learned over the course of her career.

Engage in the conversation or get left behind

Stewart is adapting to a new era in the workplace. For the first time, millennials now make up both DineEquity’s employees and consumers, and they’re having a dramatic effect.

“It’s an interesting group who cares about what you stand for as much as what you do,” she said. “In the old days, you used to put out a press release or an ad and tell people that this is what we’re all about. Today, you either engage in the conversation or you are not part of the conversation.”
