For nearly a century, Coney Island has been serving up its famous Coney Dogs. Now 90 years old, the landmark restaurant at 77 S. Cherry St. serves up a heaping helping of yesteryear along with its famous pork hot dogs with brown mustard and onions, covered in beef sauce.
Jesus Valdez, the owner of what is a combination restaurant/tourist attraction, has owned Coney Island for seven years. His mother, Maria Valdez, is co-owner. The antiques in the restaurant are authentic, not an attempt by the latest chain to try to dress up something new in old clothes. For instance, Valdez said the grill the hot dogs are cooked on is the original from 1921, as is the counter where customers can choose to dine.
The recipe for success has pretty much stayed the same over the years.
