Restaurants power diners with meals, Web access and phone recharges

With thousands out of power across SouthCoast, hungry diners are eating out in droves and using the free Internet access at some eateries to check emails and power up portable electronic devices.

Restaurants reported Tuesday they had seen significant increases at breakfast, lunch and dinner because many customers remain out of power in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene.

“Last night, a … Monday night, was like a Friday night,” said Lyn Metivier, one of the owners of Mike’s Restaurant in Fairhaven, explaining it was so busy the restaurant ran out of pizza by night’s end. “We did Friday night numbers.”

She added Mike’s did lots of take-out orders, as well.
