ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Illinois (RestaurantNews.com) The line between “cheap” and “low-priced” has been drawn in the e-commerce sand, and Quality Chef Coats, Etc. is at the front lines of the price-war battlefield.
“Look anywhere on the Internet,” said company owner Jake Taylor, “and you’ll find the phrase ‘cheap chef coats’ littering search engine results and, frankly, you often get what you pay for. I don’t use that word because I don’t sell anything that is made cheaply.”
Quality Chef Coats, Etc. provides first-quality chef coats, pants, shirts, aprons and hats to restaurants, hotels, schools and individuals, and carries only the Uncommon Threads brand. Said Taylor, “I like Uncommon Threads because the level of quality is very high, and I built my business on a foundation of trust that I will provide high quality at a low price. I don’t sell seconds, and I can keep my prices low because I have that trust.
“Some businesses’ primary directive is to make a buck,” he continued. “Mine is to develop a relationship with my customers. I want to make money too, but I can’t do that and still gain people’s trust if I’m gouging them.”
Pointing out a competitor’s online ad, Taylor said, “Here’s an example: this seller is offering an Egyptian cotton chef coat, and charges almost eighteen dollars more than I do for the very same coat. I know what the cost is; I simply choose to help my customers keep more of their money and still get the same product.”
Another ad, proclaiming to sell “cheap chef coats”, had bargain-basement prices. The advertiser’s web site, however, told the truth: the items being sold were second-quality in manufacture or materials. “What kind of bargain is that, when you’ll have to replace the uniforms more often than if you’d bought first-quality?” Taylor asked.
“Even when the economy is bad, you should be able to get a good deal; and the more money I can save my customers, the more they can put back into their own businesses.” He paused, and pointed to his company’s tagline: “Uncommon value is just common sense.”
