Former ProStart students put their culinary skills to work recently to help tornado-relief efforts.
Chef Mike Chrostowski, former ProStart students from Olathe Public Schools and Kansas City-area chefs traveled to Moore, Oklahoma to prepare approximately 3,500 hot meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) for families affected by last month’s devastating tornado. The team of 12 consisted of graduates that now attend college in the area or were home on break.
Among the students was Kylie Michaels, a graduate of Olathe Public Schools, who was part of the winning culinary team for last year’s National ProStart Invitational, hosted by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, and won a $5,000 scholarship.
ProStart is a two-year program that gives 95,000 high school students nationwide the opportunity to gain real-world experience through a curriculum that teaches all facets of the restaurant and foodservice industry.
