Five years ago, chicken with a Latin flavor looked like the next big thing in North Jersey fast food. But it was a trend that never really took off.
In March, the Florida-based chain Pollo Tropical closed all five of its locations in New Jersey, including restaurants in Little Ferry and Clifton, saying it had decided to focus on states closer to its Miami headquarters. A sign still up at the Clifton store invited patrons to visit locations in Florida and Georgia.
A North Jersey trial run for the popular California chain El Pollo Loco ended two years ago with the franchisee’s decision that this wasn’t the right market for grilled, marinated chicken with a Mexican flavor.
One plucky survivor of the Latin chicken migration to North Jersey remains, Pollo Campero, but its growth in the state has been slower than expected.
