Fast casual franchise brings fresh dining experience to area
Jackson, MS (RestaurantNews.com) Newk’s Eatery, a fresh casual restaurant concept known among its loyal following for its culinary-inspired menu with an emphasis on freshness and flavor, officially opened its first location in Greensboro, N.C. on Monday, Sept. 9 at 2711 Grandview Avenue.
The casual, upscale Newk’s Eatery offers a variety of quality, craveable menu options from the franchise’s open-view kitchens, including fresh-tossed salads, oven-baked sandwiches, California-style pizzas, made-from-scratch soups and homemade cakes. The culinary-driven dining concept features exceptional ingredient combinations like salads with chicken, cranberries, pecans, artichoke hearts and gorgonzola cheese on a bed of spring greens, for mouth-wateringly distinct flavor profiles.
Beyond handmade delectables made from unique, fresh ingredients, Newk’s offers a separate catering menu and original programs that keep customers coming back. Newk’s Roundtable Club members get special offers to reward them for their repeat patronage. The club is named after the table featured in the center of every location that offers various complimentary spices, toppings and add-ons, allowing diners to customize their menu items. Another original Newk’s concept is Grab-n-Go, which gives busy patrons the option to drop in, quickly pick out a favorite menu item from the select offerings in the open, stand-up refrigerator case at the front of the restaurant for an on-the-go lunch or take-out dinner.
Prior to the official restaurant opening in Greensboro, Newk’s hosted a VIP event on Sept. 6, the proceeds of which will benefit the Greensboro Urban Ministry. This local nonprofit provides assistance, including food, shelter and employment outreach, to area homeless.
Newk’s will host an official ribbon-cutting ceremony in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Sept. 19.
Behind the Greensboro store is franchise company Kudzu Food Services, which consists of Wirt and David Yerger, a father and son entrepreneurial team. The pair has signed on to open eight more nearby Newk’s locations over the next two and a half years, including restaurants in Raleigh and Fayetteville. As their first venture with the restaurant concept, the Yerger’s opened a Newk’s in Winston-Salem in January 2012.
Newk’s is not the first investment the Yerger’s have made together. The conglomerate of companies the family owns span a variety of industries, but Newk’s is their first restaurant franchise purchase. David Yerger started his working years in the restaurant industry, filling hourly positions. After beginning a full-time career in personal finance and realizing it was not the right fit for him, David gave in to the lingering draw of the restaurant industry and decided to invest in a franchise. As a family originally from Jackson, Miss. where Newk’s is headquartered, the Yerger’s frequently dined at the restaurant chain and fell in love with the original concept and its unique, fresh food. When it came time to invest in a restaurant franchise, it was an easy decision for the family.
“I think the Newk’s philosophy of service, quality of the food and Newk’s heart for communities are the things that really gripped me as I was considering franchising,” said David Yerger. “Our guests can come in and eat quickly or stay awhile. It is a great place to meet people. There is quite a bit of value in our menu items. I’m proud of what we serve. We do as much local produce as possible. We also want to make a make a positive impact on the lives of our staff and give back to our communities. That, to me, is Newk’s! See you soon, Greensboro.”
