House-Smoked Andouille Sausage from Windy Hill Farms and Queen Charlotte Black and Blue Blood Pimento Cheese are featured in the JJ’s ‘Royale with Cheese’ LTO for April
Charlotte, NC (RestaurantNews.com) Whether you call it farm-to-table or farm-to-fork, the practice of sourcing local ingredients and producing hand crafted food for consumers is here to stay. JJ’s Red Hots just gave it a new name: Barn to Bun.
JJ’s Red Hots, the award-winning Charlotte-based upscale Hot Dog brand, has joined with two other Charlotte businesses to produce a locally sourced, hand-crafted artisanal masterpiece: the “Royale with Cheese,” which will be featured at JJ’s two Charlotte locations – Dilworth and Ballantyne – for the month of April.
The ‘Royale with Cheese’ features a house-smoked Andouille sausage with ground pork from Windy Hill Farms, which is topped with “Queen Charlotte Black and Blue Blood Pimento Cheese” from Queen Charlotte Pimento Cheese, caramelized onions and whole grain dijon mustard. It is then perfectly placed on a toasted roll for just $7.99.
“We have always been obsessed with creating exciting products that are on-trend but not trendy, for our guests,” said JJ’s founder Jonathan Luther. “Barn to Bun was inspired by Lynn Caldwell, who runs the Atherton Mills market. In a presentation, I heard her describe her vision for a ‘Charlotte Food Hub’ that would provide a wholesale central access point for restaurant operators to purchase a variety of quality, locally sourced products from farms in the area. And, while we are not there yet, the idea resonated with me and we decided to reach out to local suppliers now.”
Luther expects the ‘Barn to Bun’ theme to be a recurring one, which may or may not change monthly, depending on local supply and demand as well as guest reaction, but insists he is committed to making sure JJ’s guests always get what they want.
“We feel like it is a great idea and our initial focus groups have been very positive, but as always, our guests will decide that,” added Luther. “This I know: you will not find a better quality sausage offering anywhere. We’ve teamed up with Charlotte’s best to create something that is really special.”
JJ’s is known for its ‘Dog of the Week’ creations, in which it seeks fan, follower and guest submissions for new recipes. JJ’s, which swept all of Charlotte’s Best awards in 2014, was also the smallest and only Hot Dog/Sausage concept to make Fast Casual’s most recent Top 100 Movers & Shakers list.
“The great thing about JJ’s is that we are never satisfied. JJ’s is always looking for the next great thing,” said Brandy Newton, director of marketing and brand development for JJ’s. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously but we absolutely obsess over our products, which led us to Barn to Bun. We felt there was a better way to create something great that was truly local and the Royale with Cheese is just that.”
About JJ’s Red Hots
JJ’s Red Hots is the premier purveyor of “hand-crafted” char-grilled hot dogs and sausages in the Charlotte metropolitan area and the campus of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. The restaurant concept is built on solid, hardworking values and is modeled after venerable establishments like Ted’s in Buffalo, NY, Gene and Jude’s in Chicago, and many others. Still, JJ’s is a true American original featuring house-made, scratch prepared sides and toppings served alongside time tested, revered American brands like Tabasco, Weber’s Mustard, Martin’s Rolls, Coca-Cola and Mt. Olive Pickles. Perhaps most proudly, JJ’s Red Hots serves smokehouse hot dogs from Sahlen’s Meat Packing Company in Buffalo, NY. Sahlen’s is a 143 year-old company that remains family owned and operated, and makes, in our opinion, the best hot dogs in the world.
